Distinguished and Famous people from Keppel Bay

🌟 James Cook

James Cook’s Endeavour passed through the Keppel island group in May 1770, and his journal records the naming of Keppel Bay and its islands. Navigation occupied more attention than sightseeing: shallow water forced him to anchor and send boats ahead to find a passage. At one anchorage, the ship had less than two feet of clearance beneath it. Cook also recorded smoke on the mainland and people on an island, without identifying that island precisely. His account supplies a direct voyage connection with the bay, not evidence that he landed on Great Keppel Island. Despite stopping at anchor, the crew’s fishing was unsuccessful.

🌟 John MacGillivray

Naturalist John MacGillivray had a more direct island encounter than Cook: he landed on Great Keppel Island in 1847 during the voyage of HMS Rattlesnake. Queensland Museum research places the December landing near Leekes Creek and identifies it as the first recorded European landing on the island. That description concerns the surviving European record, not the beginning of human occupation: the island is Woppaburra Country. MacGillivray’s scientific observations became part of the published account of the voyage, connecting the bay with nineteenth-century natural history as well as naval exploration.
